Talking Ocean Organics with Tom Colombo, Superintendent of The Hyannisport Club

News from Ocean Organics
APRIL 2021 • VOLUME 1 • ISSUE 2
Welcome to our second issue!
Talking Ocean Organics with Tom Colombo (CGCS), Superintendent of the Hyannisport Club

We are wicked excited about our 2nd ever Ocean Organics Newsletter Superintendent profile. Our subject today is Tom Colombo, Superintendent of the Hyannisport Club in beautiful Hyannis Port, MA.

After presenting Tom with a freshly baked chocolate chip and walnut banana bread, he broke down and agreed to an interview (every man has his price). I thought about bribing Tom with my homemade meatballs but they don’t travel well.

We’re going to talk to Tom about his professional journey, the iconic golf property he maintains and, of course, how Ocean Organics’ products fit into his agronomic programs.

The Journey:

Tom was born in Attleboro, MA, which is a stone’s throw from Cape Cod.

“I got an early start in the turfgrass industry,” Tom laughed. “I grew up across the street from Buncie’s Pitch & Putt in West Bridgewater, Mass. I used to ride with my next-door neighbor Buncie Schwartz, on his Toro tractor turning the irrigation heads on and off to water the property. I could barely see above the steering wheel on the tractor.”

Tom’s family moved to the Cape and settled in South Yarmouth when Tom was in the 2nd grade. Directly across the street from the Colombo home was the Bass River Golf Course.

“I worked on the crew at Bass River from the 8th grade all through my high school years,” Tom recollected. “After that it was on to UMass Stockbridge for my turf education. I completed the required turfgrass internship at Bass River despite Dr. Joe Troll’s pleas to go out to Westchester County or Long Island. The reason I didn’t choose a more prestigious club was because I had a thriving landscape business in my home town and didn’t want to pass up that income.”

In 1982, at the tender age of 20, Tom’s first assistant’s job began at The Club at New Seabury, a 36-hole private resort in Mashpee, MA.

“I worked for Superintendent Mark Klimm. New Seabury was pretty much a private course until the resort component was added in the mid-1980s. I spent 4 years as Mark’s assistant and became superintendent in 1986.”

In 1999 Tom pulled up stakes and was hired as superintendent at The Ridge Club in Sandwich, MA. “The Ridge” is a gated community with some famous residents including Bobby Orr, NHL Hall of Famer and iconic Boston Bruins defenseman.

“I spent nine years at The Ridge. In December 2007, I was hired to run the show at Hyannisport.”

It’s been a busy last 13 years. Under the auspices of Architect Ron Force’s Donald Ross inspired master plan, the golf course underwent an extensive restoration. Hyannisport Club had the benefit of the Ross’s original hole by hole blueprints.

“In 2009/10, we added 17 new bunkers missing from the original Ross plans, many of them fairway bunkers. We rebuilt/relocated 53 existing bunkers and tweaked a number of greens complexes,” Tom remarked. “In addition we added a 2nd floor to our existing turf center for new office space, locker rooms, and a break room. We also constructed a second storage building and mechanic’s bays.”

Tom is keen to mention some of his golf mentors, friends, and protégé’s that have had a profound effect in his career.

“Bob St. Thomas of Hyannisport and Professor Joe Troll at UMass steered me in the right direction. Of course, so did Mark Klimm GCS at New Seabury C. C. I’m proud of the assistants that have worked for me and moved on to superintendent positions, Joe Felicetti at Pine Hills, Scott Nickerson at New Seabury, and Ryan Walsh at Woods Hole, to name a few.”

On a personal note, Tom met his bride-to-be, Leanne, at New Seabury. Leanne would summer in Mashpee and worked in the Pro Shop. Their 31-year union has produced 3 great kids. Tom and Leanne’s two older boys, Ryan and Tom, are getting married this year. Ryan is a Biochemical Engineer and Tom is a Mechanical Engineer. Daughter Emma is studying to be a Dietician and keeps an eye on Tom to make sure he eats right.
“There’s a local movement to protect the waterways and bays surrounding the Cape from nitrogen loading. Two years ago, I started using Ocean’s SeaBlend 14-0-6 granular fertilizer in June and September on our tees and fairways. The product has a nice controlled release, no flushing, and great color. I’ve cut back on Nitrogen 35% using SeaBlend with great results.”

About Hyannisport Club

Hyannisport Club was founded in 1897 when a vacationing John Reid (The Father of American Golf) first laid out a 6-hole course for friends. In 1902, the club hired Scottish Architect Alex Findley to rebuild the 6 holes and add an additional 3 holes. In 1903, the course was finished and opened as a 9-hole venue.

In 1930, Donald Ross was hired to expand the course to 18 holes. He did this while keeping the best of the original layout and a number of the original greens. This beautiful “links” course is 6400 yards from the tips but doesn’t play short. It’s often called the “toughest 6400 yards in golf” because of the famous Hyannisport wind that blows directly off of Nantucket Sound. Bordered by Nantucket Sound, you can see water from every hole but, interestingly, there are no water hazards on the course.

The Club hosts an annual early spring tournament aptly named “The Seagulls.” Many of Tom’s industry friends show up to play. You never know what kind of weather the golfers will face. It can be warm and dry or freezing rain and snow but the tournament always gets played.

The course is located about a half a mile north of the Kennedy Compound and more than a few of the Kennedy family have been members at the club. Other notable members include LPGA Hall of Fame golfer Pat Bradley and until he passed in 2019, NBA Hall of Fame and Boston Celtics Icon John Havlicek.

The weather conditions and the micro-climate Tom has to deal with to grow quality turf can be challenging, to say the least

“It takes a while for the soil temps to warm up and the turf to start growing in the spring, we’re always a month behind,” Tom commented. “We have a Heinz 57 variety of grasses here including fine textured perennial poa biotypes, bentgrass, and fescues. Five of the greens are Findley originals so the turf’s been there for 120 years. We’ve been inter-seeding the greens with A1 and A4 bent. The wind is always a factor. It is a true coastal environment. We primarily hand water greens most of the time. We are striving to keep the spirit of links golf and the ground game alive. There is a tolerance for drier firmer versus greener softer.”

The Hyannisport Club is a “Certified Audubon Sanctuary Golf Course.” Under Tom’s leadership, Hyannisport Club continues to manage the property with a less-is-better mentality. What that entails are more native areas and a conservative, sustainable maintenance program that includes cutting back on chemical applications, the reduction of applied nitrogen, and reducing water use.

I’ve cut back on Nitrogen 35% using SeaBlend with great results,” Tom reports.
Two Ocean liquid biostimulant products Tom likes in his greens sprays are XP and Stress RX.
“July and August are my stress months, sometimes also into September with the climate changes. XP and Stress RX are in every foliar spray. They are good tank mix partners and do a great job keeping the greens healthy.”

The last piece of the puzzle were the surfactants.

“Well, this guy KC came to see me with Gregg Mac from Atlantic and I have a lot of confidence in him,” Tom laughed. “I started incorporating Ocean’s Mariner surfactant into my programs a few years back and now I’m using it on greens, tees, and fairways. I like that there’s a biostimulant in the formulation for plant health benefits. It retains just enough moisture in the root zone so I’m not out there dragging hoses when it gets dry. Mariner also tank-mixes well with other products that I add to the tank for soil/rinse-in sprays.”

Thank you, Tom, for your time and we wish you the best of success in 2021.
